I will meet you again…

Here is an attempt to translate Amrita Pritam’s one beautiful poem and a youtube song version of the same. She was one of the most infamous and romantic women writers of pre-partition India and like her poems her life story was also unusual with many parallels to the stories of Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera. Locked between an unrequited love which she never had, and a dedicated lover who dedicated his life for her, she created beautiful poetry full of imagination, hope and magical realism… Enjoy!

I, will meet you again!

Where? How? Don’t know(really)

May be! like a flicker, in your thoughts

I will land on your canvas

Or! on your canvas

like a single mysterious line (among many)

will silently be starring at you!

I, will meet you again…

Maybe! just becoming a ray of sun

I will mix up in your colors

and sitting in the embrace of those colors

will fill up your canvas

Don’t know! How…,and where(who knows)…

But I will meet you for sure…

Or! I will become a spring of water

And just as the spring water sprinkles

I will dissolve with those droplets

on your body

And , just by becoming that ‘coolness’

I will embrace your body…

I really don’t know anything more!

But I do know for sure

that whatever time will manifest

this presence will go along with me

When this body crumbles

everything crumbles…

But these threads of memories

are all connected to the end of the universe

I will seek those endings,

and will weave those threads

and I will meet you again,

I will meet you again, for sure…

Main Tenu Fer Milangi

Kithe? Kis tarah? Pata nahi

Shayad tere Takhiyul di Chinag banke

Tere Canvas te Utrangi

Ya Khore teri Canvas dey Utte

Ik Rahasmayi Lakir Banke

Khamosh Tenu Takdi Rawangi

Main Tenu Fer Milangi…

Jaa Khore Suraj ki Loo banke

Tere Ranga vich Ghulangi

Jaa Ranga diyan Bahwa vich beth ke

Teri Canvas nu Wlangi

Pata nahi Kis Trah-Kithe

Par Tenu Zarur Milangi

Jaa Khore Ik Chashma bani Howangi

Te jivan Jharneya da Paani udd da

Main Pani diyan Boondaa-n

Tere Pind te Malangi

Te Ik Thandak jahi banke

Teri Chhaati de naal Lagangi

Main Hor Kuch nahi Jaandi

Par Ena Jaandi

Ki Waqt jo v karega

Ae Janam Mere naal Turega

Ae Jism Mukkda hai

Tan Sab Kuch Mukk janda

Par Cheteyan dey Dhaage

Kaayenaat di Kana ude Hunde

Main unha kana nu chunagi

Dhageyan nu walangi

Te tenu main fer milangi
